On Thursday 12 December 2019, the Bulawayo community hosted the second Python meetup. The event was organised by Mpumelelo Nyathi , a software development consultant based in Bulawayo.
The meetup was attended by roughly 25 people and it was hosted at the TechVillage Innovation Hub, the best co working space in Bulawayo.
I presented a talk after Mpumelelo gave the welcome remarks where he talked about the state of the Python Bulawayo community and what the plans are for the community going forward. My talk was a demo of how to build a Geo Location Service using Django. In the talk, I explained how the web works, HTTP and the request-response cycle, and also how to interact with APIs in Django.
I noticed that most of the people who attended the meetup weren’t software developers but are data scientists or use Python for other things besides developing software applications. I enjoyed giving the presentation and from the comments I received after the meetup, many people are interested in getting involved in web development.
I look forward to attending more meet-ups and helping to grow the Python community in Bulawayo. A huge thank you and shout out to Tech Village for hosting us. Pictures from the event are on my twitter.
